HOW TO: Spring Cleaning & Organization

Stars

Introduction: Let's Freshen Up

Spring is officially here, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to refresh your home. To us, “spring cleaning” isn’t just about scrubbing and tossing old stuff - it’s a chance to create a brighter, more organized, and uniquely beautiful space that makes you happy.

Spring Cleaning: Why Bother?

Imagine walking into your living room with the windows open, sunlight and the smell of flowers drifting in, and seeing only clean surfaces, everything carefully tucked away, and just the right amount of springy decor. Doesn’t that sound nice?! Well that’s the goal.

Spring cleaning is a satisfying accomplishment itself, but it also has real benefits for your home and well-being:

  • Reduce Stress: A clean, tidy space creates a calming environment and reduces feelings of being overwhelmed or out of control
  • Boost Productivity: When your space is clear, your mind can focus more easily on the things that matter
  • Welcome Spring: Lighter, more open spaces are a better fit for the energy and renewal of the season
  • Reflect & Refine Your Style: Take this chance to update your decor, let go of what no longer feels right, and bring in touches that do

How We Can Help:

Throughout this guide, we’ll walk you through how best (we think) to approach decluttering and deep cleaning. We’ll also highlight practical tips and products to help you achieve an organized and current home, so that you’re free to go enjoy that sunshine outside.

Approach: A Step-by-Step Guide

Set Your Plan: Tackle One at a Time

Spring cleaning can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down makes it manageable. We recommend a room-by-room approach:

  • Create a Checklist for Each Room: List tasks for decluttering, cleaning, organizing, and refreshing (see living room example below)
  • Set Realistic Goals: Tackle one space per day or weekend, depending on your energy levels and schedule
  • Gather Your Supplies: Include basic cleaning tools and organizational products like baskets, bins, and trays to simplify the process
  • Celebrate Your Progress! There’s no better feeling than checking tasks off that to-do list, so mark them as done, reward yourself with a treat, and take a minute to appreciate how your renewed space makes you feel

Simplify & Declutter: Out With the Old!

Why Declutter?

Clearing excess can free up mental and physical space and help you feel more in control of your environment. Purging items that are no longer functional or joyful also creates room for more useful, lasting, or meaningful pieces.

Decluttering Approach:

Every room should be addressed. You may use different methods depending on the space or items (tossing expired food from the pantry is prob going to be easier than deciding whether to keep that college sweatshirt), but the important thing is to keep going!

Sort things into ‘Keep, Donate, Toss’ piles. Be honest about what you really use and love, and if it doesn’t serve a purpose or make you happy, it’s time to let it go!

Ask yourself questions like:

  • Does this still work or fit, or has it been used up or outgrown?
  • Have I used or worn this in the last year?
  • Are there old or cheap items that can be replaced with better, longer-lasting, multi-functional pieces?
  • Am I actually attached to this, or do I just think I should be, or that it has potential?
  • Does this item spark joy? While it may sound cheesy, the KonMari method may be more useful than you think.

Purging is a skill, and it definitely comes easier to some people than others. If you’re having a tough time, try involving a friend or partner, going with your initial gut instinct or giving yourself a period of time to revisit your piles, waiting until you’re in the right mindset, or keeping a donate basket always on hand. Find what works for you, and stick with it!

Deep Clean: Dust Bunnies No More!

Now that excess clutter is out... A deep clean goes beyond the usual tidying up. Focus on areas that may have been overlooked during the winter. You know what's needed here.

  • Dust Surfaces: Don’t forget hard-to-reach areas like fans, lighting, baseboards, vents, pictures, books, and the backs of shelves
  • Vacuum & Mop Thoroughly: Pay attention to carpets, rugs, under furniture, and corners. A clean floor makes such a difference!
  • Wipe Down Windows & Mirrors: Let in more light by cleaning windows, doors, and maybe even a dingy wall

Organize: Get Your $%!+ in Order!

Once you’ve let go what you no longer need and your space is clean, it’s time to get organized.
Resetting isn’t just about putting things back where they were. It’s about being thoughtful and creating logical systems for your home.

Tips to Keep in Mind:

  • Look at Everything - From your kitchen spices, to your closet clothes, office books, entryway shoes, living room decor, and beyond. Don’t overlook the small stuff!
  • Have a Strategy - Arrange or contain by function, type, color, genre, etc. so that you can easily find and return things.
  • Implement Smart Storage Solutions (see below) and labeling where helpful.
  • Name a Home - Have a CONVENIENT (or you won’t stick to it) place for EVERYTHING. Now get used to putting things AWAY in their home and not just down.
  • Hide Stuff Away - Keep only what you use daily in sight. This could be the remote control in the living room, or the olive oil in the kitchen. Store everything else out of eyesight.
  • No Strays - Keep single items off of surfaces and the floor. Place things like the remote and matches into a tray, your gym bag on an entryway hook or in a basket, keys and miscellaneous items in a bowl or catchall, etc. This immediately makes your space look cleaner and more put together.
  • Be Intentional  - Revisit your decor and its placement with careful thought. Are you pairing that vase and frame on the top shelf because that's how it's always been, or because you're happy with it? Keep refining until it feels right.

Smart Storage Solutions:

  • Stylish Storage Baskets: Perfect for tidying up living rooms, bedrooms, or closets. A great solution for larger items like extra blankets or things you want to have on hand but out of sight like toys or magazines. Baskets come in all sizes, styles, and materials, making them a great and versatile option for any space.
  • Decorative Trays & Bowls: Corral small items like remote controls, keys, toiletries, or utensils on trays or bowls to keep surfaces mess-free in an aesthetic way.
  • Bins & Jars: Organize odds and ends, off-season clothing, your kitchen pantry, and most anything else with bins, jars, canisters, or other clean and airtight storage. Be sure to label to make everything easy to see and access.

Brighten Your Space: Embrace Spring Vibes

After decluttering and cleaning, it’s time to give your home a seasonal update.

Simple Ways to Brighten Your Space:

  • Replace Soft Furnishings: Swap heavy textiles for lighter alternatives, replace dark, thick winter throws and pillows with lightweight options, add brighter colors and prints
  • Incorporate Spring Decor: Add touches like vases of flowers, wooden accents, and other nature-inspired elements
